Henry Crown Fieldhouse Renovation at the University of Chicago
Henry Crown Fieldhouse Renovation at U of C

Built in 1931 under the direction of architects Holabird & Root,  a Gothic design with Indiana limestone, it served as a 368’ x 165’ indoor practice facility with a dirt infield that was utilized for football and baseball practices, while a track encircled the infield and a raised wood floor was used for basketball.

Now the building has a fitness center, cardio area, 200-meter indoor track, four multi-purpose courts for basketball, volleyball, indoor soccer, and tennis, multi-purpose room, five squash courts, and four racquetball/handball courts. There are locker rooms and a training facility in the basement which accommodate 500 athletes.

Working with MDC Architects on a tight school schedule, we redesigned all the plumbing and fixtures for the locker rooms, showers, and bathrooms with a little time to spare for the students’ arrival in the fall.

Eckhart Hall
Eckhart Hall at the U of C

Erected in 1930 with funds donated by Bernard Eckhart, the hall was built to house the Mathematics Department. It was also used for the physical sciences, including some work for the Manhattan Project during World War II.

As with all of these Gothic-style campus structures, accessibility was a concept of the future. Our task was to work closely with the architectural team of MDC Architects to reshape and upgrade the restrooms to provide proper accessibility.

We redesigned the hot and cold water delivery systems, and integrated the below-floor and in-wall piping within the constraints of the structure.

While we closely monitored the construction, the contractors were able to meet the demands of a high quality design with a tight summer schedule.
