205 West Wacker Drive, formerly known as the Engineering Building, is a 25-story high-rise office building containing approximately 325,000 square feet and includes a 60-car indoor valet parking garage and two basement levels. The office building was designed by Burnham Brothers
Weber Consultants was commissioned to identify energy conservation investment opportunities and make recommendations for implementation. We studied the energy consumption relative to other buildings in the EPA’s Energy Star Program and were able to obtain an Energy Star Rating of 90 for the building.

Weber Consultants was the MEP/FP engineer of record for the new headquarters of The Salvation Army.
A complete renovation of a 1990s era office building, the new interior includes two atriums and completely upgraded systems. The HVAC systems were converted to digital variable air volume, and the old electric controls were upgraded to cloud-based digital. The lighting system is now 100% LED, with occupancy and daylighting controls to further reduce energy consumption. The state of the art kitchen includes variable volume hood exhaust. Safety systems were completely upgraded, including the fire alarm and elevator recall systems, and accessibility standards were brought up to current codes. An exterior lighting renovation included high efficiency long life metal halide fixtures with photocell control.

The 5-building college campus provides student housing, staff housing, administration facilities, dining, recreation, chapels, and classrooms. WCL was commissioned to study the energy-consuming systems of the campus, identify energy investment opportunities, and make recommendations for implementation. Our energy report detailed 38 energy opportunities that in total would save 60% on their $290,000 annual energy bill.
Recommendations implemented include the installation of super-high efficiency boilers, a 300-ton high-efficiency chiller plant and cooling tower and a new web-based direct digital system. WCL designed these systems and installation was completed in 2009.
The DOE2.1 computer energy model was used to determine the numerous energy conservation opportunities recommended in the energy report.

This 12,000 SF two story facility in Bartlett, Illinois, received LEED Gold certification. WCL is the engineer of record and LEED project administrator for the design which includes occupancy-controlled lighting, very high efficiency air-cooled air conditioning, condensing furnaces, energy recovery ventilators, economizers, and low water consumption plumbing fixtures.
Extensive DOE2.1 energy simulations were used to model geothermal heat pumps, water-source heat pumps, high efficiency chillers, and high efficiency split systems. Several different types of vision and day lighting glass were modeled, as were various lengths of the overhangs and light shelves.
F-Chart simulations modeled the solar thermal and photovoltaic systems, and geothermal software was used to estimate the size of the geothermal field.
Energy costs for the facility are approximately 40% less than a similar structure built to the current Code.
