Zapata Apartments, 3230 West Armitage Avenue, Chicago, IL

Weber Consultants was the MEP and Energy Engineer for four new multifamily subsidized residential buildings for Bickerdike Redevelopment Corporation in Chicago. This 30-unit building includes new fire alarm/life safety and elevator recall systems, a full sprinkler system, solar domestic hot water, geothermal analysis, high-efficiency HVAC and hot water heat, and variable speed booster domestic water pumping.

All of the buildings, including the 24, 12, and 3 unit apartments, are Chicago Green Homes certified. This certification ensures the buildings have low life-cycle energy costs with well-insulated, tightly-constructed building envelopes, verified with blower-door and duct pressure testing.

The Vandenberg Residence, Alpine, CA

A 7,000 SF residence designed with the goal of reducing annual energy consumption to zero. A super-insulated passive solar design, the two  story residence is equipped with numerous innovative systems including ground-coupling for pre-cooling ventilation air, solar space and water heating, natural ventilation utilizing a three-story ventilation tower, and evaporative mist cooling. Energy simulations using MicroPas and F-chart verified that the heating and cooling needs of the residence were nearly 100% provided by the alternative energy systems.

These apartment towers, designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, set the standard by which subsequent glass and steel high rises are judged.

Weber Consultants was retained to provide fire alarm and security system upgrades while maintaining the integrity of Mies’ lobby design.

Briles Residence, Fallbrook, CA

A new 13,000 SF residence and estate in the lemon groves of Fallbrook, California. With a 1280 SF solar heating system that annually provides over 80% of the space, domestic hot water, and pool heat, at the time it was one of the largest residential systems in the state. Numerous computer energy simulations helped design the system and determine the lowest life cycle costs.
